Há algum tempo alguns jovens picharam "ART IS RESISTANCE" e a bandeira do movimento no muro da escola em que estudavam na cidade americana de "Springfield" (não é a cidade dos Simpsons!). Eles foram pegos e fichados, mas a polícia não responsabilizou o NIN pela infração. Agora o vídeo de um noticiário de TV falando sobre esse assunto caiu no youtube.

Parece que o Trent estava todo bonzinho nesse show. Olhem só o que disse um fã no ETS:

"He gave the familiar speech of "Its really great to get all of this support in a country which we haven't toured before". But, I must say, Trent really made it feel honest and true (Tho truth to be said, the crowd just went freaking NUTS and jumped, waved, and NIN really liked it. For instance, the show was about 2 Hours and a few minutes more, just because they enjoyed the crowd so much). Oh, and another one was, that Trent wanted to say something, but this woman sat on someone, and flashed a shirt. The shirt was something like "Trent *bleep* me". Trent was going to say something when he looked at the shirt and said: "Thats a Nice Shirt".

Os fãs comentaram que o TR estava puto. Ele disse algo como: "now doesn't it make you feel better ... i would actually feel better if i killed the promoter...".

Depois, um engraçadinho resolveu gritar em Hurt pedindo por Head Like a Hole e aí o "véio" enlouqueceu e disse que tinha ouvido e que ficou realmente puto com aquilo. Ele deu outro piti e jogou o teclado no chão. No ETS eles comentam isso com mais detalhes.

Era engraçado ouvir o Nine Inch Nails naquele momento. Jude conhecera Flórida nos bastidores de uma show de Trent Reznor. A realidade da morte dela o atingiu de novo, de cima a baixo, como se estivesse tomando consciência, pela primeira vez, do que havia acontecido.

(...) Tinha conhecido Ana há três dias antes, em Nova York. Tinha sido convidado para fazer dueto com Trent Reznor para a trilha sonora de um filma ? dinheiro fácil. Acabou ficando para assistir ao show que Trent estava fazendo no Roseland. Ana estava nos bastidores, uma garota miúda usando batom violeta e calças de couro que rangiam quando ela andava.

TRENT NO SPIRAL

Some of you have wondered how we perform "me, i'm not" and "the great destroyer" live. I have a MacBook running Ableton Live and I trigger loops, treat the loops, trigger video and play various virtual synths. Alessandro is treating various parts I send to him as well as my vocals and he manipulates the video I trigger. Aaron is playing slide guitar, electric guitar (processed by me) and also manipulates his own parts (that sounds dirty!) All of this is live and can be extended or improvised as we see fit. - Festival sets / production: Sometimes we can't use various aspects of our production due to staging limitations. Set lengths are NOT up to us - they are determined by the various festivals. Sometimes festivals are great for us, sometimes they aren't. Sometimes great festivals are marred by us being booked in the wrong slots. Sorry about this when it happens.

Trent Reznor slams Smashing Pumpkins ahead of festival link-up Bands come face to face at Carling Weekend

Reading And Leeds Festivals Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor has slammed Smashing Pumpkins' comeback - just before the bands share a bill at The Carling Weekend: Reading and Leeds festivals. Reznor's outfit are second on the bill to the grunge titans in Leeds tonight (August 24) and in Reading on Sunday (26). The Pumpkins headlined the bash back in 1995, at the height of their commercial success. Frontman Billy Corgan split the band in 2000, but they reconvened last year and released a new album, 'Zeitgeist', in July. However, along with Corgan, the only other previous member of the group who remains is drummer Jimmy Chamberlain.
Reznor told NME.COM: "I was never a big Smashing Pumpkins fan back when they were the Pumpkins, not to shit on Billy (Corgan) or anything but I don't hear anything that would make me want to care. "I think trying to resurrect the name Smashing Pumpkins .........its all a bit corporate for me." And Reznor admitted he wasn't overly impressed with the line-up on the day his band are playing, though he did have positive comments to make about the festival in general. He commented: "I heard the line up for another day and that sounded a lot better than the line up on the day we are playing, so I doubt you will see me on the side of the stage for Fall Out Boy!" He added: "But it's (Carling Weekend) always seemed the crème de la crème of festivals. This is the definitely the highlight of our tour when it comes up."

"The Hand That Feeds", do NIN estará no jogo Rock Band

LEIPZIG, Germany--Previously confirmed for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Harmonix announced today that Rock Band will be coming to the venerable PlayStation 2 platform. The PS2 version of the game will feature "many" of the modes of the 360 and PS3 games, and will also incorporate some all-new gameplay elements.
European versions of Rock Band will also be getting localised content for the different countries in the region, both downloadable and on-disc.

The following 10 songs were also announced for Rock Band, and all will be original versions:

Deep Purple -- "Highway Star"
The Clash -- "Should I Stay or Should I Go"
Faith No More -- "Epic" Smashing
Pumpkins -- "Cherub Rock"

After more than 20 years of making wonderful music, Trent Reznor doesn't slam his head against the wall anymore. The talented man with the piercing eyes and the serious look, sitting in a small room behind the central stage at the Sziget festival with a bottle of water, and he looks like the responsible adult at a field trip. A moment before he conquers the stage in front of 50 thousand people, he spills his heart out. Year Zero, the latest album by Nine Inch Nails, came in the middle in the middle of a personal turnonver in Reznor's life. On September 5th he'll make it to Israel, together with the titanic band, for a show at the fair & trade center in Tel Aviv. At the back of the stage Reznor seems calm and peacefull. When he speaks, he's sitting comfortably on the couch in that little room, and every word he sends out to the air, like his music, is precise and thought of heavily. Even if every once in a while he makes a joke or two, or even when he plays the pinball machine outside the room, you have to notice the deep seiousness that blends in with his calm manner.
On stage, he remains serious, but the calm disappears, as if it never was. Reznor and the band go crazy, wild, and break the stage between the heavy sounds and bass that goes into your bones. For many years Reznor has been considered sort of an outsider in the music industry. The creativity and the dark demanding industrial music that came out of him during the years, was considered ny many, and justly so, to be unique, inspiring, Exquisitly precise. This came to be in the Nine Inch Nails albums, the massive shows, and at work as the producer of Marilyn Manson and numerous others. But the road was never easy.
Inside all the non-stop music, came depression, madness, and almost death. "I was always a few levels under manic-depression, also according to the doctors", Reznor tells Ynet about the hard time that came during the 90's, "And in addition to that, I'm not that good in social situations. So I started a band where I can let my emotions out, and make the something of beauty. But in the same time it's hard, and I used to think: "no-one actually wants to listen to my music". I never felt that comfortable in this position. When I'm alone, only the instruments and me, I can tell myself that nothing I'm doing is any good. I used to say: 'how am I fucking going to write any new songs? I'm not that good'" "I learned that if I have a few drinks, I'd fill better about myself, and I could handle interviews or people, and that way I could handle other peoples' expectations of me, because I don't think I'm that exciting." "I read what people have written about me, and it sounds like something cool, and I know I'm not cool". While this happened, we've let out a very successful album and everyone wanted to be my friend. Suddenly I realized I could buy a house. I've never even imagined that. I was Stunned by little things like faucets, I didn't know I need to buy faucets, I thought they just came with the house." "And then the drinks became a lot of drinks, and someone told me what Cocaine could do, and I was like "Even Better!" Now I can talk to people about... Nothing. And I've felt myself become something I didn't like at all." "I started letting myself down on a genuine level, not only inside my head. I've become that guy I didn't want to be. The drunk guy, the guy who embarrasses himself. I was so low into that place, that I couldn't stop. I've spent a few years knocking my head against the wall and lowering my confidence." "But in the end, like every junkie, I've reached an intersection, where you're either going to die, and that's not so glamorous, or you'll have to do everything you can in order to stop being the way you are." "It happened to me in 2001. And I've decided to do everything in my power not to remain in that cycle". When that moment came, Reznor decided to make a move and listen to everything he was told. Because no doubt, he didn't know what he was talking about. "I used to tell the doctors: 'you don't know me, I'm not like other people.', But it wasn't true, I was just the same as every street bum, only I had a few lucky years." He recalls, "I've had enough. One of the things I was told to do was take a time out and rest instead of chasing something that didn't exist. So I did it, I took a few years off and I wanted to see if I can survive as a human being and if I can love myself again, and I could." "When I started working on the last album 'With Teeth', I didn't know if I'd be able to write music, I didn't know if I've ruine dmy brain, if I'm old, or if I"m supposed to be fucked up in order to write new songs." "I've reached a point where I had to answer those questions, and even if the answers would be: 'you can't write anymore' or 'your brain's a mess', than it'd be sad, but ok. And that's how I started the album that brought me back." "It isn't the best album I've ever made, but I saw that I can write songs, record, and go on tour while sober, go thru crisis and get on stage in front of thousands of people, and know that we might fuck up. I was hopin we won't fuck up, but even if we did, so? It happened before." -Alternate Reality- After the long road he took on "with teeth", Reznor, a new man, began working on "year Zero", the album which takes him to Israel together with the great musicians: Josh Freese, Jeordie white, Aaron North, and Alessandro Cortini. Besides it being a great album, what came with it amazed the entire industry. Reznor created an entire Mythology which describes the album, and planted it as codes and hidden hints, on websites, bathroom stalls, radio stations, and t-shirts. In order to explain everything that went on with that move, You'd need several days of listening, but Reznor explains shortly: "I wrote the album with a story, but I didn't know how to tell the story. I thought about letting it out as a book, or writing it into the album art, but it didn't feel right, and no-one buys Cd's these days anyway." At the end of the matter, the stiry turned out to be an Alternate Reality Game (ARG), that got many applause as an extraordinary promotion tool. "It wasn't supposed to feel like a game" says Reznor "I wanted the music to be the center of it. I hired people to assemble it and I paid them myself, I didn't even go to the record company, because all they think is how to sell ringtones." "I think it came out really cool. And it did what I wanted it to do. When the work started we decided not to call it a marketing strategy. I know it functions as a marketing tool and it sells the interest in the album, but it wasn't supposed to. It's just the album's art, divided into a few pieces." When it was all complete, Reznor felt stronger. "I was a new man", he says, "one that could go back to the record company and tell them 'Fuck You'" -It's okay to steal music- "Fuck Them" is Reznor's lately firmed but solid attitude towards the major record companies. Tens of albuns behind him, but today, with a look to the future, Reznor sees things completely deifferently. "In the last few years it's getting much easier to reach music", he explains, "people download it at home, buy it on-line, but the music industry got left behind on this one. Once I made my money selling albums. If you bought my album in 10$, I'd get around 40 Cents. And that's if the company actually sends me the money." "the next album I'll do will be the last one I owe the record company by contract. After that, I don't give a fuck." So what will you do? "I don't know, but I know what I won't do. I won't let out a record hoping no-one steals it, and when does happen, get mad." "If you can't get the album, steal the damed thing and give it to your friends. I made it so you can listen to it. The tooth paste is out of the tube, and you can't make it go back." "When the new album came out, the record company told me that they think it'll sell 300,000 copies on the first week. But the album sold half that, and I found myself pissed off because I know we've reached alot of people, and I know alot of people have this album on their Ipod. I can't fight it, and I think that stealing music is ok and I say it with a full heart, because I do it too." "If the album of the band I love reache sthe internet today but I have to wait a month to buy it in the shop - I'll still it. And I'll try to remember to buy it when it's out, although sometimes I forget to. And I don't want to buy it on Itunes, because the quality isn't as good, so 'fuck that'." "If you wanna enjoy the music, then listen to it. If you wanna support me, then come to a show or maybe buy a tshirt." -No longer trying to break the rules- At the past Reznor said that he started to work with music seriously as a boy because he wanted to breal form the small city which he grew in. "I grew up in a small, shitty town (Mercer, Pensilvenia), that taught you to believe that the real world is somewhere you can't reach, and that your destiny's sums up to working the gaz station down the road, or maybe a modest, realist career." -And you think you've accomplished all you've dreamt about? and in retrospect, is there anything you regret?- "I don't regret anything. I wish I wouldn't have waisted a few of my years as a drunk, but it turned me into who I am today, and I'm happy with it. And I wish I was thirty, But I'm 42." "I always knew I loved music, and the secind I got exposed to rock music, I knew that writing and expressing yourself could be the coolest thing in the world. Living without rules, being famous." "My ego was moulding at the time, but there was no way to get there. We didn't have money, or connections, so I quit school and gave up the idea of a normal career. It was a risk, to see what happens if I actually try." "After a couple of years of living poor and cleaning the toilets of recording studios, things started happening." "I'm proud of all that I've done, but my wishes today are different. I wanna do it more for me. And I think, 'can I sell more albums? Yes. Can I win a few more grammys? Yes. But will it make any difference? Not really" " I think, as an artist, that I can make better music, and that I can do more interesting things that satisfy me. And with time, I want to be a human being and raise a family, and get the feeling that I'm doing the right thing." -Would you define yourself a 'rock star'?- "I don't really know what that means. It's flattering, but I don't feel like I have a lot in common with Tommy Lee or Bono. Maybe as a person I'm more like Bono than Tommy Lee, but I used to be Tommy Lee as well." "When I turn my TV on and see shows like 'cribs', which are mostly designed to show the life of a rock star, then I feel that I don't wanna be that guy, and live in an attitude of look at what I've got and you don't." "I wouldn't want to represent anything like that in any form. But I'm not complaining, I had a good run and I've had my fun. I was a guy who took things to the extreme and saw where it lead." "I guess there was a lesson I should've learned. I find myself happier today as a hard working person, than the one breaking the rules."

Album: The Wall - Pink Floyd (1979)
The Wall got me at a moment in my youth when I felt very lonely. I wanted to isolate and Roger Waters' way of thinkin' really connected to my feelings. I totally got obsessed by that album. I heard the album at least a million times, trying to understand the liner notes and spelled every letter of the lyrics. It's funny that if you do this, you find out that what a band actually is singing about can be totally different than the official lyrics. The songs were actually more than songs for me; it was the whole thing and I thought it only 'spoke' to me. The Wall still inspires me; I've also made Year Zero a conceptalbum.

Book: They thought they were free; the Germans- Milton Mayer (1955)
The author, an American Jew, travelled to Germany after W.W.2 to search for stories of the normal citizen. So not a soldier but a banker and a baker. The German citizens had fallen for it (W.W. 2) with their eyes open. Why did nobody see this crazyness coming? And the atrocities? And if someone saw it coming, why didn't they do something to make it stop? How could they sell those idiot thoughts to the citizens? Was everybody a murderous person? How did you wake up after it in that world? The answers are very clear. The ideas were sly, with little bits they got sneaked in. It was subtle propaganda. The population slid along the point of no return and the moral border between good and bad was exceeded. And when they (the population) did find out there was no way out anymore. On the moment there's another big western country where that happens.

Movie: Children of Men- Alfonso Cuaron (2006)
This movie is like my album a doomscenario about our civilization. Previous year I was already busy with Year Zero when I saw this movie, here in Europe, in the cinema. It's one of the best things I've ever seen, especially the end. During the whole movie you don't know what to expect and that's why the end is such a surprise. Not only the setting and story has a lot in common with Year Zero; the art direction created exactly the same atmosphere that I wanted to have at my album. There were moments when I was really afraid, it felt like I really was part of the movie, like I was there at that place in that scene. I went to see it (the movie) the next day again, I never do that, I'm not that sort of type. Yeah, in the past, when I was a very heavy drinker I used to watch Taxi Driver all the time. Get fucked up and watch Taxi Driver. At least 50 times. Can't be good for you. When I got clean I threw the movie out of my house and I never thought about it (the movie) again. Maybe I have to watch it again to see what happens.

Concert: Ministry, Cleveland (1987)
I was already busy in my head with the plans that later became the band Nine Inch Nails, on the moment when Ministry crossed my path. The plans weren't finished yet. They (Ministry) had the albums Twitch and Land of Rape and Honey out that time and I never heard such a thing before! That was already a step into my artistic identity. And then I saw them live. extremely loud, one piece of power, pure impact. They weren't the clichés where punk and metal already belonged to during that time; it was like there was happening something terrible in front of your eyes. It was terrifying. The first thing I thought was; is this going harmful for me? Then I thought that this was the missing factor; a concert as a punishing experience, an concert where you go not only to be entertained. I thought; what a great idea! I believed in it and after the concert I worked on finishing my NIN ideas.

"As you all know (or sure as hell ought to know by now), Aaron North is the totally insane yet virile guitarist for the legendary industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails.
Born in Waukegan, Illinois, on April 3, 1983, North first became noted for his BMX stunt-riding at the Wisconsin Dells during junior high school. After a near-fatal injury involving a mid-air collision with Scott Baio, North was confined to bedrest for nine months, during which time he took up the electric guitar, tantric masturbation, and dwarf-tossing; the rest, as they say, is history. After a stint with popular boy band the Icarus Line, North joined NIN and has been touring with gothic mastermind Trent Reznor since 2005. North is also part of the duo behind groundbreaking record label and webzine Buddyhead, which he formed with hetero life partner Travis Keller way back in the summer of '69. (In the late nineties, Buddyhead quickly became infamous in Hollywood after a series of humiliating pranks on megastars such as J. Lo, Lorenzo Lamas, and Ted Danson.) On a break from NIN's grueling touring schedule, North recently sat down with the NIN Hotline at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas to answer a few questions.

TNH: First, some questions about Buddyhead. Next year will mark 10 years since the formation of Buddyhead, and eight years since the formation of the record label. What changes have you seen from the management point of view over this period, both in running the webzine and label?
AN: Haha. "management". You make it sound so professional dude! Nothing has really changed. If anything, about 4 or 5 years ago, I started touring a lot more often, and wasn't able to spend as much time on it with Travis as I had before. But when it does happen, it's the same as it ever was, just me and him. So yeah, the website part isn't updated as often as it was in the past. I dunno. I suppose we just got tired of talking about what we think sucks all the time, and aren't as interested in as many new bands anymore? It sounds lame, and maybe makes us seem super old, jaded, and cynical, but so it goes. I stopped watching mtv and listening to the radio a lonnnnnnng time ago. So when I stumble across that stuff, or open a magazine from time to time, I feel really out of the loop, cos most of the new stuff is completely off my radar. But why shouldn't it be? There's too many bands these days anyway, and I'm not in a hurry to find out about the new shitty ones. Not when I still have thousands of old cd's from Billy Bragg to Oasis to Neil Diamond to re-discover over and over. So why would I give a shit about what NME or whoever is telling me "the next Libertines" is? I thought the original sucked in the first place, why would I care about their newest knock-off? No thanks. I'll be at home checking out deep cuts on that Creedence record I never got around to instead, thank you very much.

TNH: How is Buddyhead handling the crazy shifts in the music industry, including sales and distribution?
AN: We aren't. Ha. No, I mean. If we had started putting out records in an attempt to become rich, or "moguls" or something, then yes, I suppose it would be a concern. But that has never been the goal. Yes, we are a "business" and have to deal with distributors and all that stuff, but I don't see us as a part of the "music industry". If we were doing it for the money, we wouldn't keep putting out records we know aren't going to be charting on Billboard in this lifetime, and we would've signed all the terrible bands we had the chances to years ago who have music videos set at funerals or whatever. Not that I'm gonna name names or anything! I'm delighted to see the "music industry" nose-diving. Kids don't really buy rock n' roll albums anymore anyway. They buy videogames, and spend all day on the internet re-designing their myspace pages and jacking off. And the ones left that are actually even buying the music, are usually buying bad hip-hop. What major labels see as a "problem", I see as an overdue solution to the over-saturation of mediocrity. These days, kids start a band, and after they've played one show, and posted some songs on their myspace page, they think they're immediately owed a record contract, manager, booking agent, fame, and fortune. The reality is, there IS no money in rock n' roll anymore. When I was growing up, a "big" band would sell 10 million albums. These days, the biggest bands are selling more like 2 million albums. And that's at the very top. At the very bottom, even though there wasn't really any money down there before, there's NOTHING down there now. So, maybe this will weed out all of the people making music for the wrong reasons. Maybe all the tards recycling bland garbage, just so they can get on "cribs" and get their weenies wet. Hopefully they'll realize it's just not happening anymore, and go back to pumping gas. Then, in a perfect world, the people left making music will be doing it for the sake of creating art. The concept of a "major label" is so antiquated now, it's a punch-line. In the past, the attraction to signing to a major label was maybe a big budget to record an album, and a shot at some sort of promotional push, so that maybe a band could get on mtv or something. Well. mtv doesn't even play videos anymore, so subtract that from the equation. and. now that everybody has Final Cut or similar programs at home on their computers, ANYBODY can make a music video. The same goes for big recording budgets. There's a reason most recording studios in L.A. and everywhere else for that matter are going under. cos anybody can buy Pro Tools, or Logic, or whatever now, and record their music themselves. So. you have bands like The Arcade Fire and Bright Eyes. bands on indie labels. playing the Hollywood Bowl. So, what's the attraction of it all anymore? None. Slash and burn and start from scratch. None of it has affected, or will, what Buddyhead does anyway.

TNH: How much of a constructive role do you play in the bands signed on with Buddyhead?
AN: We only sign bands when both Travis and myself are excited about them, and feel like they should be heard by more than just their group of friends, or the people in whatever town they're from. We're not trying to turn anybody into huge superstars. We're just trying to help make people more aware of things that they probably should have been already.

TNH: Did Travis Keller really leak your cell phone number a while back?
AN: Nawwwww. I believe that was Sully the Bull. It's cool. The score is settled every day when he has to handle Jeordie's dirty show clothes.

TNH: Moving on, given your guitar preference of Hagstroms, have you bought and/or played any of the new USA-made models, and if so, how do they compare to Swedish-made vintages?
AN: I have a few of them. they're cool. but. the main reason I got into the older Hagstroms were cos the single coil pickup models have these pickups in some of them that just scream like Sully when he has to talk to a girl. They decided not to make replicas of those models cos they were perceived as being too "cheap" or whatever, but that's what I liked about 'em. Different strokes for different blokes I suppose. Other than that. the new versions of the "swedes" and "super-swedes" are pretty cool. I had a lot more Les Paul's in my live rotation when I started playing with nails, and never really owned any of those models, but after playing a few, I almost entirely swapped out all the Les Paul's for the Swedes.

TNH: Same question but this time about butt plugs.
AN: Vintage Swedish models all the way.

TNH: Now for some technical questions: what equipment do you use for the following parts of the following songs:
a) Sin solo
AN: I dunno. in this part of the song, I'm usually just more concerned about how Trent is always grappling me, and trying to shove me off the stage and into the security barricade, that the whole "playing" thing or what pedal is on or whatever is forgotten. It's funny. every time that part comes up I'm like, "Ok, this time I'm really gonna NAIL this thing" and then Trent comes and knocks me on my ass again. Maybe next time.

b) Ruiner solo
AN: Ehhhhhhh. I dunno. OH! The "freedom rock" part! Usually some sort of guitar with a humbucker, a wah pedal, maybe some microsynth or something. Again, on this one, my brain is usually somewhere else. The song always kicks in, and I go, "DAMMIT. what are the words I hafta scream really fast again? 'The Ruiner knows Phil Spector, he likes wearing sweaters' Right?"

c) Non-Entity
AN: I have no clue. I can't even remember the last time we played that. I just remember something with a wah or something, and trying to get out of the way of that big LED fence thing when it came down so I didn't die an embarrassing death in front of thousands of people.

d) The Perfect Drug
AN: That's easy, only cos I remember finger-fucking the arrangement on that sucker forever. I know I play a Jazzmaster in drop D tuning, and make lotsa weird noises. It sounds cool, and is fun to play actually. Maybe we'll even perform it live someday. Eh. Prolly not.

TNH: How many different guitars do you go through during a six week run?
AN: Good question. I have no idea. I think Trent and myself go through more microphones than anything. Guitars. obviously I have a few of my "babies" out there, but not as much anymore. It took a couple times of accidentally breaking an early 70's Les Paul, or a vintage Hagstrom or something to come to the conclusion that a nine inch nails stage is not the place to be playing your most prized possessions. So. my favorite children are left at home. It's ok though, Travis comes by to check on them while I'm away. walk them, talk to them, play them really obscure b-sides by The Verve while he frantically burns rope on my couch. Well, he doesn't really hafta do that last part, but I know he does anyway.

TNH: Multiple choice. If you had to be gay, which of the following men would you choose?
a) Jesse Hughes
b) Fred Thompson
c) Jeordie White
d) Meathead

AN: Wuddya mean by "had to"? You make it sound like a punishment! You also make it sound like you don't already know the obvious answer! Definitely Meathead. Cos those other guys are all in bands, and you don't know where those things have been.

TNH: Bleeding on stage: good show, or infection scare?
AN: Hmmm. Neither. Bleeding is good, cos it'll wash the infection out on its own with the flow of the blood. It's those injuries where ya don't bleed that you really gotta worry about. And I wouldn't say it makes a good show either. There's so many lights on that damn stage, I could have a wombat strapped to my face on fire, and only the people in the first row would possibly notice. Whatev's. "It beats pickin' cotton and waitin' to be forgotten".

TNH: How much, if at all, have past incarnations of NIN live influenced your playing? (In answering this question, please keep in mind the memorable contributions made by Zombie Jeff Ward.)
AN: Not to sound like an ignoramous, but none really. I had never seen nails play live, or videos or bootlegs or anything like that before I joined, just heard the records. I remember they played in Anaheim on the tour for "the fragile" and wanting to go, but I was on tour and missed it. Well. I guess I saw the "march of the pigs" video, does that count? Honestly, growing up, and listening to "wish" and stuff, I thought the guitars, and the noises, and the whole reckless sound and aesthetic of it was insane. Then somewhere in there after starting the gig, I checked out that live dvd, and the guitars sounded so ordinary to me, it was kind of a let down. So. I made an attempt to come closer to those original aesthetics than what the live guitarists had previously done. On top of that, Trent made it clear from the get-go that he wasn't really interested in me trying to sound like any of the old dudes anyway. He was like, "Instead of copying something Robin just copied from Richard, do what you want". And to the dismay of kids everywhere with shaved eyebrows and those weird shoes with the big soles on them, I did.

TNH: Do you wipe sitting down or standing up?
AN: Standing. Definitely. Never understood sit-wipers. That's like people who load toilet paper backwards, with the paper coming from the backside of the roll. Inconceivable.

TNH: Out of the several years you've now been with NIN, are you able to isolate any particular defining moment when it all came together?
AN: There's a few moments that really stand out. Perhaps too many to mention. Most of them not happening in public view. One of them that was and stands out would be Mexico City. I think it was the longest set we ever played, and I remember during "the day the world went away" the crowd was flicking their lighters in time with the song. Since the people at the front of the stage would hear the music a smidge earlier than the back, it caused this wave of flames through the thousands of people. Incredible.

TNH: On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the worst and 10 being the best, how good a lay is Paris Hilton?
AN: HA! Dude, ask Meathead!

TNH: What can you tell us about the inevitable solo project you'll be starting when that sad day comes, hopefully far off in the future, that you decide to quit NIN?
AN: Well, I definitely don't have any "solo album" plans. I'd actually hafta kinda matter first for anybody to give 2 shits about something like that. But. I will say I have started a new band, and we'll have something released in the very near future. But, like I said, it's a band, and the other people involved are just as important to it as I am. I'm looking forward to bumming out small audiences in small sweaty clubs again.

TNH: If something has been advertised as "minty fresh," do you believe it to actually be "minty fresh? "
AN: Interesting. I'm not really a big mint fan, so I guess I've never pondered too hard about that one. The only time the term "mint" ever comes into play around me is when Trent will say something like, "Look at that dude's ass. Damn, he's so MINT."

TNH: Let me ask you a personal question. If you were getting married, would you invite your bandmates to the ceremony, or do you try to keep your professional life separate from your personal life?
AN: Of course I would invite them. I've never considered playing music to have anything to do with being "professional".

TNH: Who would win in a fight, Trent Reznor or Chris Benoit?
AN: Who the hell is Chris Benoit?

TNH: What bands are currently out there that you would want NIN fans to check out?
AN: Good question. The new Black Rebel Motorcycle Club album is bad ass. The Grinderman record is cool. The last Oasis album was their best since like, 1995. The new Queens of the Stone Age record gets my pee-pee excited too.

TNH: Finally, let me close with a question from our very own Meathead: " i'd like to know why he's such a bitch." Any comment?
AN: Tell Meathead I'm super bummed out he never returns my calls or emails. He moves to L.A. and I think, "Now's my chance to tap that shit like Gregory Hines", and instead he starts rolling around town with the super elite Lohan and Hilton crowds, and is too cool for anybody anymore. I know yer reading this dude! Stop screening my calls! I know where you live bitch!"

Um fã traduziu uma entrevista que o TR concedeu à Czech Zine Metalopolis (não faço a mínima idéia de onde seja isso) e postou no ETS. Ele mesmo explica que não tem certeza se traduziu corretamente e contesta a veracidade da entrevita, colocando algumas observações em negrito.
De qualquer forma, o que ele traduziu está aí:

Q: The span between between YZ and WT was relatively short that we´re used to. You´ve also been touring more since WT. What happened? Is that also because of the new line-up?

A: What happened...the biggest change was getting myself off the addiction. I´d begun work on WT then I started touring and I realised that I still had some ideas. Touring may get very boring, it´s like living the same day over and over. Hence I took a laptop with myself and began with the works on the new album. Thanks to that the touring time past quite quickly. And when before an year, I guess it was in the end of August, I had some good songs that I was satisfied with, so I went straight to the studio and YZ was out within few months. Then came another tour and we´re already working on the new album.

Q: Again?

A: Yeah, we´re just finishing the new Saul Williams album on which I´ve been working for an year and half. We´re working on it for a long time. Alan Moulder mixes it.

Q: The same guy who mixed NIN albums.

A: Yes, he´s the best man on the world, we´re working togehter on Saul´s album as well. It´s gonna be great album, I can´t wait for the realese date.

Q: Older NIN works were very personal, but with YZ you made an album with political concept.

A: When I write lyrics, I always write about something that currently bothers me, that´s currently important for me. What´s currently resonating in me, what I can honestly sing about. My lyrics used to be very personal. They were full of unsightly feeling of sadness and anger - which I was filled of that time. I think I´ve got more mature and self-assured in what I am doing. WT and definitely not YZ aren´t focused on myself. I was more interest in the word that I´ve beein living in. I don´t think it´s just because I stared to look more around. It´s because I feel that everything what is happening is getting quicker and more intensive. It mainly goes to what is our government doing.

Q: This is the point I was getting to. More and more musicians have been involved with politics, especially after 9/11. I am talking about Green Day and their American Idiot, Bruce Springsteen. Many emo bands have left-wing ideology an image. Except of in compares with songs like Dylan´s Masters Of War or some Neil Young activities it feels calculated and shallow. I mean, why should we believe Trent Reznor? How do we know that it´s not an image and pose with the commercial aim.

A: No, I fully understand you. I can honestly say that I didn´t make a political album for that purpose. It didn´t eve cross my mind. What I wanted to do (and I think I did it well) is to send a message about what is happening in America. To write a fictive story and put it in the future. At the same time, it was something completely new for me. And the result is...No, I don´t think that YZ is going to unite America and everybody´s going to realize that George Bush is a fucking crackpot and we must get rid off him just today. I´d wish that but it´s, of course, not realistic. Many things on YZ are just about what is happening and that people are starting to realize that and think about it. More and more people start to think about it and that´s a good thing, at least from my point of view. One of the biggest problems of America is that we´ve got in the position where we don´t care. We only watch TV meanwhile the news has turned into the propaganda, while media are owned by right-wing companies that keep telling us that everything is ok. That causes very lethargic climate. But with the current situation, especially after 9/11, it´s not just about Muslims attacking us, but more about our government activities. The hidden interests come up. Some people are awaking and asking what it going on. I think that if the things go this way, the American empirre and we know it is over.

Q: Almost every NIN era is kind of connected with censorship. Videos like Sin or Closer were censored. You were not allowed to appear on MTV awards. When somebody sees the uncensored version, he asks: what is so incensing about it? Why is the censorship so actual in America? You can see more disturbing things in the TV news.

A: It´s kind of complicated. There´s also an attempt to suppress any resistance. One of the biggest emporiums in America is Wal-Mart. That kind of a shop that comes to the small town and tears down all smaller stores. Wal-Mart is becoming one of the major record sellers and the only NIN album that you can actually buy there is YZ, because it doesn´t have a "Parental Advisory" label on it. I, unlike NIRVANA or majority of bands will never put out a censored version of my album. And if Wal-Mart doesn´t want to sell it, fuck it, you can buy it elsewhere. You won´t buy Picasso in Wal-Mart as well. What I am more wierd about it that you can´t find any NIN records in W-M, but you can buy Grand Theft Auto where you get points for stealing or you can buy a movie like Scarface. That´s ok. A: The times have changed. You don´t have to buy the physical product, we have things like iTunes. You can also steal it.

Q: Yes, that´s how it goes, however, I believe that they are already working on how to fix it (laughing)

Q: It´s also the story of YZ and its untraditional campaign. Hidden links, the way of releasing some songs via USB cards. It´s not usual for some one like you. You´re an artist with a big company contract.

A: Internet has changed everything so much and the reason why we chose that kind of campaign was that I wanted to watch the story of the album, how does it spread and I wanted to make it the way that you need a buch of friends to solve the codes. Poeple from all over the world needed to get together to get the pieces together while discussing the serious topics. I watched various forums where were people discussing my haircut or flaming each other. All of sudden they started to discuss something with a substance and they started to ask themself if it was already happening.

Q: We were talking about the internet and downloading. Most of your albums have non-typical package. Is the package important for you? To offer more than "just" music? To make an album worth buying and not downloading.

A: That´s various. I can´t force people to not download music. I think that almost everybody in Russia steals music, but that doesn´t really matter. I want to make the music as good as I am capable of and if you buy any NIN album in the store, I want you to feel like it was worth it. It goes to the package, T-Shirt, a show...I want to left some feeling in you.

Q: I saw the second Vienna show in the very end of March. What surprised me and on the other hand pleased me was the number of older songs. You played more than a half of The Downward Spiral, almost entire Broken, even some Pretty Hate Machine stuff. The Fragile and With Teeth were almost not included.

A: We changed the playlist often on that tour. You know, when I go to see a band I don´t want to hear the whole new album, I want to hear the songs that I like. Sure I wanna something new, but I don´t wanna be flooded by the new material.

Q: It´s not like I didn´t like the gig. I meant that you played many of those songs to death....

A: I can´t say I feel like "my god, again?" when I look at the playlist. I ask the band what songs they want to play, when we rehearse (like currently) before the next tour. We don´t play the songs that we don´t enjoy. I can´t say that any of my songs does mean nothing for me and I am proud of that. I don´t wanna boast myself but I´ve done something, something that really matters. But it may be caused by the fact that I didn´t get mature within 20 years. (laughing) Some songs are living their own life and if you can play them feelingly and convincingly, they work perfectly. We want to bring some harsh stuff on this tour. I mean like Year Zero.

Q: What arrested me on YZ... Like TDS is the characteristic representative of the nineties, YZ is kind of typical for today or the near future. It reflects trends and events - lycially and musically. It contains various influences. Sometimes it sounds more danceable, some parts are Hip-Hop oriented, some songs almost feel like remixes. It reminded me Fixed EP. It´s less guitar/rock oriented album. Why so big difference in compares with recapitulating WT?

A: It´s partly because of the way how I was writing the new material. I only could have composed on my laptop when being on the tour....backstage, on the bus, in the hotel room. It was impossible to record guitars or live drums. I had pro-tools on my laptop and I like dance music as well. I wanted to make a littel bit dance and electro sounding album. Simply, I was enjoying it. I can´t say I wanted to make noise or dance album, retrospective or rock album...I basically used everything what I liked. I also tried the new way of making music and nailing the pieces of sound. I focused on the rhythm and dance aspect. The album was suppoused to talk about the end of the world at the same time - so let it have a free, enhanced dance rhythm. I don´t think that the next album is going to be similar. It´s not because I am not satisfied with this one, but because I want to enjoy the creating process at all cost. If I am bored, the album will be boring. In that case, I´ll stop and choose a different path.

Nine Inch Nails to make television show based on 'Year Zero'

Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor has revealed to Kerrang! that he's been working on a story based on his latest album 'Year Zero', which may be made into a television show.

"We've got a producer on board and have met with writers," Reznor tells Kerrang!. "If it works, it works and if it doesn't, it doesn't. I'm more interested in it being a television show than a film at this point. We're about to pitch it to the network, so we're a couple of weeks away from meeting all of the main people and we'll see what happens."

Reznor, however, is remaining tight-lipped about how the Orwellian story will unfold.

"I don't want to spoil it", he smiles. "It's not formed enough yet to blow it open to everyone. We may record a new soundtrack for the show. We'll see, but there's already the 'Year Zero' record attached to the story. We'll have to see if they opt to broadcast the show first and then we can worry about telling everybody about those sort of things."

Reznor has also been hard at work overseeing a remix album featuring fan's reinterpretations of tracks taken from their 2006 album 'Year Zero', which is yet to see a release date.

"It was an idea that came to me a few years ago," he explains. "We put the master multi-tracks out for two singles- 'The Hand That Feeds' and 'Only' - and allowed anybody to remix those songs how they saw fit for free with no real agenda.

"It's sort of like an opposite approach for me because one of the biggest things I can get out of something like this , is having other peoples input on my material," Reznor adds. "When it comes to making a real record, it's pretty much a one-man dictatorship and I do things how i see them and have always worked on that basis."

Reznor has largely been impressed with the standard of remixes submitted by fans.

"Some of the stuff we've recieved is really interesting and occasionally great," he reveals. "Some of the stuff, though, is unbelievably terrible but it's cool that they had their fun with it! Again, there's no real agenda for doing this, other than giving people the opportunity that not many other artists out there do. Why not let people have fun with that?"

Nine Inch Nails will play a handful of UK shows this month, including the Carling Weekend: Reading and Leeds Festivals: See Gigs for details.

A hilarious mishap (besides Reznor joking on the light technician during the lyrics of "Only" was that the festival coordinators started the end fireworks too soon (NIN was the last act to play), in the middle of the song "Hurt." This confused Reznor, who paused the song and remarked, "Well, this is a first!," and watched the fireworks with the rest of the crowd before finishing the song.

Você explica que Year Zero foi um trabalho que surgiu de uma fantasia sobre o fim do mundo. O que você realmente viu nesse Apocalipse?
Bom, é algo que vai ocorrer dentro de 15 anos. Sou apaixonado por ficção científica, assistia sempre na TV. Da forma como entendo o mundo, e sei que costumo ser pessimista, vejo que as coisas não estão funcionando, não estão bem. Chegamos a um ponto que não tem mais volta, e digo isso política, espiritual e ecologicamente.

Year Zero traz diferentes pontos de vista de pessoas que precisam enfrentar uma verdade iminente: o fim. Quando pensamos em ficção-científica, geralmente imaginamos um futuro distante, como o retratado em alguns filmes e livros do gênero. Mas você prevê um fim do mundo em 15 anos. Uma data que está bem próxima.
É algo muito pessoal. Quinze anos, para mim, é um limite, um tempo em que as coisas vão mudar muito. Quem sabe porque terei 57. Você avisou para seus fãs para que eles ouçam o YZ várias vezes porque o disco "soará diferente e revelará mais coisas do que se espera". De alguma forma, sentiu a obrigação de dar esses conselhos porque as pessoas, hoje em dia, andam muito preguiçosas? Fico angustiado em pensar que já não ouço discos como fazia antes. Anos atrás, podia repetir um disco até o infinito. Agora não. Será que é porque cresci e perdi a vontade? Ou é porque existe muita música? Ou porque há mil anos não escuto nada interessante? Quero que YZ seja como esses álbuns que quanto mais você ouve, mais você descobre segredos que vão muito além do som. Os fãs de NIN estão quebrando a cabeça para descobrir se esse é um disco político ou o quê. Mas não é uma crítica a Bush sem nada disso. Quem quer escutar canções sobre Bush? YZ é um álbum conceitual, está cheio de simbolismo e alguns significados ocultos.

Você também comentou que o YZ é "perfeito para dançar e trepar".
Vamos pensar de outra maneira: com que banda - como trilha sonora - você seria incapaz de trepar? Creio que com System of a Down. Eu gosto muito, mas para fazer amor... Mas também não consigo escolher músicas minhas para isso. Seria algo como estar na frente de um espelho.

Mas dizem que espelhos e sexo são uma dupla perfeita. Os espelhos de teto têm essa fama, pelo menos. [Gargalhadas].
Fazer sexo ouvindo minhas músicas? Isso seria como ir pra cama com meus filhos!

Li alguma coisa sobre uma dança muito comprometedora entre você e o Robert Smith, do The Cure. O que você lembra desse acontecimento? Onde foi?
Essa foi uma das melhores noites da minha vida. Eu morava em Nova Orleans e o The Cure tinha feito um show lá. Eles queriam fazer uma festa pós-show em um clube gótico e me chamaram. Ao entrar no lugar, vi o Robert Smith e, não sei como, nos abraçamos, falamos que nos amávamos e começamos imediatamente a dançar.

Em 1999, você disse em uma entrevista que nunca tinha sido feliz. Alguma mudança oito anos depois?
Estou mais seguro, então faço coisas das quais eu gosto e isso me alegra. Que cheiro tinha a mansão de Sharon Tate e Romam Polanski na primeira vez que você entrou lá? A casa era lindíssima. Já foi demolida, mas tenho a porta principal no meu escritório. O cheiro? Mesmo sabendo que vou decepcionar você, preciso dizer que não cheirava a morte nem a corpos despedaçados.

Reznor afirma que seus discos e DVDs são em média dez dólares mais caros que os outros lançamentos na Austrália. Não sou contra ganhar dinheiro, mas é preciso ter alguma integridade, também. No momento, Trent Reznor não está feliz por estar congelando em Minneapolis, mas o líder do Nine Inch Nails está feliz que sua turnê esteja finalmente dando certo. As primeiras duas semanas foram um desastre, com um cancelamento e dois shows adiados por que o bateirista Jerome Dillon teve uma complicação cardíaca (ele tem sido substituído por Alex Carapetis). "Isso jogou um grande balde de água fria nos trabalhos" disse Trent, "mas agora estamos ai, na correria!".
Reznor, que largou as drogas e o álcool 4 anos atrás, ainda está curtindo a brisa da sobriedade. "Eu encontrei uma nova apreciação por música em geral - ouvindo, tocando, pensando e me jogando sobre ela", ele diz, somando que há a possibilidade de uma turnê solo (sozinho, com piano e efeitos) e um novo álbum do NIN em seguida. "Eu sinto que tenho muito a fazer e muito a dizer".

Qual sua primeira memória musical?
Meu pai me disse que eu sempre colocava Are You Experienced, do Jimi Hendrix, mas eu realmente não me lembro disso. Eu me lembro mesmo é da minha primeira compra, "The Partridge Family's Greatest Hits". Eu comprei por $3,99 numa cadeia de lojas pré-WalMart falida chamada Jamesway. Putz, tô velho!

Você tem 40 anos, é muita idade para agitar? (too old to rock'n'roll?)
É só um número. Eu posso te dizer que fazer música hoje em dia dá um sentimento de vitalidade que nunca senti. Quando fiquei sóbrio, minha primeira prioridade era tentar não querer me matar. Depois disso, eu percebi que as drogas e o álcool levaram não só minha alma, mas também meu amor pela música. Havia se tornado um trabalho, pessoas me cobrando e pressionando e a natureza competitiva dos negócios havia me consumido.

Os Beatles e os Beach Boys eram competitivos, e eles inspiravam um ao outro. Houve alguma banda assim pra você nos anos 90?
Há níveis diferentes. Quando eu estava começando, Janes Addiction veio a Cleveland. Eu estava a poucos metros do palco e fiquei destruído: "Eles acabaram com a gente, vamos descobrir como competir". Mas há outros níveis de competição: a realidade que você está numa competição de negócios com seus amigos, tentando vender seu produto. Quando Downward Spiral saiu, o disco do Soundgarden [Superunknown] saiu no mesmo dia, e eles ganharam da gente. Eu não tenho nada contra eles, mas este era o inimigo naquele tempo. Dois anos e meio depois, quando eu estava indo fundo em ser um vicíado em drogas, mas nós vendemos mais discos. Eu venci você, Soundgarden da porra!

A versão de Johnny Cash de "Hurt" é ótima, mas qual é o pior cover de NIN de todos tempos? Uma dessas bandas de metaleiros cabeludos [Trixter] fez um cover de "Terrible Lie". Eu quase liguei pra eles e disse, "Eu irei lhe pagar se você não lançar isso!". Uma das minhas grandes e favoritas influências é Devo. Imagine minha emoção quando eles estavam tocando "Head Like A Hole". Essa emoção durou até quando ouvi a segunda nota! Mas eles ainda são foda. Seis anos atrás, você disse que o rock & roll "se tornou uma grande merda".

Como você vê agora?
Bem, estou trabalhando para colocar o rap rock - ops, desculpe, new metal - de volta aonde ele pertence: como uma nota esquecida no rodapé. Estou um pouco mais otimista agora, mas no meio alternativo eu vejo um monte de exageros. Eu acho que Radiohead é mto bom e Arcade Fire - Eu vi um show deles e não pude acreditar o quão bom eles são. Por outro lado, há bandas como Franz Ferdinand - todas as pessoas "cool" falam que eles são bons, mas para mim soam como se eu estivesse sendo enganado por alguém. Essa é só minha impressão.

Você viveu em Nova Orleans por quase quinze anos. Havia algum bar que frequentava para ouvir música ao vivo?
O que você deveria ter me perguntado era "se tinha algum bar que eu não ia?". Musicwise, geralmente íamos ao Tipitina - o verdadeiro que ficava no centro. Eu tenho saudade daquele lugar. E agora eu sei do fato que nunca irá ser a mesma coisa.

O que é música romântica para você?
Tenho que dizer, eu acho que essa pergunta nunca foi feita pra mim. Você quer dizer, se tivesse um romance no ar e eu tivesse meu iPod na mesa... Exato. Uh, seria algo de Debussy à D'Angelo - Voodoo em particular. Talvez Erykah Badu, Sigur Ros ou o último álbum do Brian Eno, Another Day On Earth. Todos estes estariam.

Você tem falado há anos sobre ter uma cantora sob sua asa. Quem trabalharia melhor com você?
Sade estaria no topo da lista. Ou alguém do tipo da Lauryn Hill, menos a personalidade.

Qual o melhor presente que você já recebeu de um fã?
Ontem eu recebi uma chave pro Narcóticos Anônimos. E eu recebi uma grande carta quando estávamos trabalhando no Downward Spiral, que dizia, "Trent, sou seu maior fã. Eu faria qualquer coisa por você. Aliás, estou escrevendo esta carta com meu próprio sangue". Não sou um analista de escritas, mas posso garantir que esta pessoa estava sendo sincera.

Contro e algumas alterações minhas) O Nine Inch Nails (NIN) é a banda de rock industrial mais popular de todos os tempos e foi responsável por trazer o estilo para a mídia no mundo todo. Talvez não chamar o NIN de banda seja o termo mais apropriado, já que o único membro oficial é o vocalista/produtor/compositor/multi-instrumentista Trent Reznor. Sozinho, ele sempre guiou o direcionamento musical da banda (ele é, entretanto, ajudado em shows por uma banda regular).
Ao contrário da vasta maioria de artistas industriais, Reznor escreve de forma melódica sons tradicionalmente bem estruturados, onde as letras são o ponto focal. Seus instintos não apenas fizeram as ásperas batidas eletrônicas da música industrial mais fáceis de digerir, mas também colocou uma face humana num estilo que usualmente tentou soar o mais mecânico possível. Enquanto o Ministry seguia atrás do público Heavy Metal, o NIN sempre buscou construir uma grande base de fãs do rock alternativo na mesma época do boom do NIRVANA no Mainstream.
Como resultado, Reznor se tornou uma genuína estrela e sua notória escuridão, de instinto provocador, o fez um Jim Morrison dos anos 90.

História

Michael Trent Reznor nasceu no dia 17 de maio de 1965, na pequena cidade de Mercer, na Pensylvania, EUA. Aos cinco anos, seus pais se divorciaram e acabou sendo criado pelos avós. Mesmo assim, Reznor sempre disse que teve uma infância feliz. Quando criança, costumava andar de skate, construir aeromodelos e tocar piano (basicamente música clássica). Sua professora de piano (Rita Beglin) o achava um gênio. No colegial Trent era considerado "popular". Tocava sax e teclado na banda de jazz da escola, era considerado o melhor ator nas aulas de drama pelos colegas e também tocava em algumas bandas de rock locais. Ele chegou a interpretar o apóstolo Judas na escola e ganhou o prêmio de melhor interpretação por isso. Ao ir para a faculdade Reznor passou a estudar música e computadores no Allegheny College, mas em pouco tempo largou para se dedicar somente à música.
Logo depois se mudou para Cleveland com seu amigo do colegial Chris Vrenna. Na mesma época, descobrira o New Wave e a música underground e ficou fascinado com o industrial, já que oferecia uma maneira agressiva de usar instrumentos eletrônicos. Aos 19 anos, se inscreveu com sucesso em uma audição para entrar em uma banda chamada The Innocent, e lançou um álbum chamado Livin? in the Streets. Porém, saiu da banda após apenas 3 meses e começou a tocar com grupos locais. Pouco tempo depois, Reznor começou a trabalhar em uma loja de teclados (Pi Keyboards) e como zelador na gravadora Right Track recording studio. Foi aí que a história do NIN começava a ser construída efetivamente. Após um curto período de tempo, ele se tornou coordenador do estúdio, aprendendo a usar diversos programas de computador e trabalhando no seu próprio material nas horas de folga.
O Nine Inch Nails era criado então em 1987 e Reznor passara a gravar composições já em 1988, a partir de influências de Skinny Puppy e Ministry, tocando ele mesmo todos os instrumentos. No início, Trent simplesmente esperava lançar um cd de 12 músicas por algum selo pequeno da Europa, mas quando mandou os demos para cerca de 10 selos americanos, TODOS eles quiseram fechar contrato. O músico acabou assinando com a TVT, que lançou o debut álbum do NIN, ?Pretty Hate Machine?, em 1989 (após ter rejeitado o nome Industrial Nation). Reznor rapidamente arrumou uma banda e começou um tour com o Skinny Puppy por um curto período de tempo, pois logo se cansou de tocar apenas com artistas do mesmo estilo. Com uma formação um pouco mais sólida, Chris Vrenna na bateria e Richard Patrick na guitarra (e diversos tecladistas), Trent conscientemente escolheu abrir shows das bandas Jesus & Mary Chain e Peter Murphy pelo desafio de ganhar fãs que poderiam não ter gostado inicialmente de industrial. A estratégia ajudou o NIN a expandir sua base de fãs substancialmente. O single "Down in It" chegou a tocar em danceterias, entrando na lista de dance and modern rock da Billboard, e a MTV logo começou a passar o vídeo "Head Lika a Hole" na sua programação. Em 1991, após arrumar um tecladista fixo, James Woolley, o NIN se tornou parte do primeiro festival Lollapalooza, o que expandiu consideravelmente sua base de fãs.
O sucesso de Pretty Hate Machine continuou aumentando e, apesar de nunca ter passado da 75º posição, ficou 2 anos na lista da Billboard e vendeu mais de 1 milhão de cópias ? um dos primeiros álbuns do gênero a atingir essa marca. A TVT tinha um artista precioso nas mãos e para assegurar que Reznor iria produzir outros sucessos, tentou controlar o direcionamento musical da banda. Furioso com a mediação externa, Reznor tentou fixar uma liberação do seu contrato, levando a uma interminável batalha judicial. Com isso, um longo período de inatividade do artista seguiu, o que virtualmente deu a todas as bandas alternativas dos anos 90 a chance de aproveitar os elementos sonoros criados pelo NIN. Suas únicas gravações nesse período foram feitas em projetos paralelos.
Em 1990, ele co-produziu e cantou em "Suck", uma música do primeiro disco do Pigface's. Também cantou um cover do Black Sabatth, "Supernaut", com a banda Al Jourgensen-led 1000 Homo DJs (a TVT na época ordenou a retirada do vocal de Reznor da música, mas Jourgensen na verdade apenas alterou minimamente a música e disse que a havia regravado). Contudo, após cinco anos parado, Reznor continuava uma figura popular, mesmo tendo seu momento comercial diminuído significativamente.
Finalmente após ter resolvido seus problemas com a TVT, Trent partiu para os negócios e assinou com a Interscope, o que o ajudou mais tarde a criar seu próprio selo, a Nothing Records. Reznor passou então a gravar materiais novos e em 1992 a Nothing lançou o EP "Broken" , assim como um remix dele, chamado FIXED. O Broken tinha mais (e mais pesadas) guitarras do que Pretty Hate Machine, parte em resposta ao som ao vivo do NIN e parte como uma evocação da frustração de Reznor quanto às guerras legais. O cd também continha duas músicas bônus - uma versão de Suck e um cover de Adam Ant para Physical - demonstrando uma nova fase do artista. Apesar de muitos reviews caracterizarem o EP como difícil de se escutar, Broken -muito bem aceito pelos agora consideráveis fãs que a banda possuía - apareceu no TOP 10 da Billboard e o primeiro single/vídeo, Wish, venceu um Grammy por melhor performance de Heavy Metal. A reputação de provocador de Reznor aumentava a cada dia, ainda mais com o banimento do clipe da música Happiness in Slavery, que mostrava o artista Bob Flanagan sendo estripado por uma máquina. Outro vídeo do cd Broken, o Broken Movie também feito na época, nunca foi lançado comercialmente por causa do seu conteúdo (mostrava uma vítima de tortura sendo desmembrada enquanto assistia aos vídeos do NIN).
Anos mais tarde esse vídeo caiu na internet com rumores de que o próprio Reznor o tivesse liberado. Assim como o Broken Movie, outro filme chamado "Closure" caiu na internet, este último traz clipes, cenas de backstage e performances da banda, incluindo a do Woodstock 94, em que a banda subiu ao palco coberta de lama. Esse vídeo nunca foi lançado oficialmente por problemas com a censura.
Já pensando no futuro, Trent decide então se mudar para L.A. para trabalhar em seu segundo álbum. Lá, monta um estúdio na casa onde a atriz Sharon Tale foi assassinada por Charles Manson. O disco não demora muito para sair e é intitulado "The Downward Spiral". Um trabalho muito ambicioso, um álbum conceito imerso no rock progressivo que continha o mais perfeito detalhamento que um estúdio pode dar a um cd e que nunca havia sido visto até então em um álbum. O resultado não poderia ser outro, o cd apareceu como número dois na lista dos mais vendidos da Billboard e se tornou um dos maiores vencedores de discos de platina da história. Pouco tempo depois, Richard Patrick deixou a banda para formar o Filter e Reznor aproveitou para remontar o grupo com o baterista Vrenna, o tecladista Woolley, o guitarrista Robin Finck e o baixista Danny Lohner.
O NIN causou uma ótima impressão no concerto de verão do aniversário de 25 anos do Woodstock ao fazer uma performance feroz e incrível com um set list perfeito. Enquanto isso, a MTV havia colocado uma versão do vídeo Closer na sua programação e o NIN estourava com um dos maiores hits musicais daquele ano (o inusitado é que o som contava com o coro "I want to fuck you like an animal"), o que ajudou Reznor a se tornar um dos maiores roqueiros controversos da época. A balada "Hurt" também ganhou um bom espaço na mídia e anos mais tarde foi regravada por Jonhy Cash. Mais tarde neste ano, Reznor participou da trilha sonora do filme Assassinos por Natureza de Oliver Stone, editando os sons e também apareceu em um álbum de Tori Amos no backing vocal da música Past the Mission. Em 1995, com o novo tecladista Charlie Clouser, o NIN foi para a estrada com o David Bowie, cujos álbuns de 70 (junto com Pink Floyd) foram as grandes influências do The Downward Spiral.
Trent também contribuiu com um cover para a música do Joy Division "Dead Souls" para a trilha do The Crow e fez um remix do último álbum, batizando-o de Further Down the Spiral. O remix alcançou o TOP20 da Billboard (uma prova de sua popularidade). Usando então o dinheiro do The Downward Spiral, Reznor construiu um estúdio parecido com uma obra de arte em New Orleans, em um prédio que antes fora uma funerária. Enquanto pensava no seu próximo movimento, produziu uma das bandas pertencentes a sua gravadora, a Nothing Records. Era o segundo álbum do Marilyn Manson, chamado Antichrist Superstar, que com surpresa o transformou em um superstar. Nessa época, Trent se transformou em um grande amigo de Marilyn Manson, mas essa amizade acabou após Manson contar detalhes da vida pessoal de Trent em sua autobiografia, como por exemplo, o caso que ele teve com Coutney Love, o qual Trent nega com veemência. Em 1997, Vrenna e Reznor tiveram um desentendimento e o amigo de longa data foi substituído por Jerome Dillon.
A avó materna de Reznor faleceu naquele ano e sua amizade com Manson se deteriorou. Mesmo assim, ele produziu outra trilha sonora, agora para "A Estrada Perdida" de David Lynch, e lançou um novo single, "The Perfect Drug". Mesmo já estando consagrado na mídia por um bom tempo, Trent estava incerto sobre o movimento que tomaria para o álbum sucessor do The Downward Spiral. Essa incerteza resultou em um caso sério de bloqueio do escritor. Nesse meio tempo, o NIN provava uma imensa influência em diversas bandas. Grandes gravadoras assinaram com bandas de industrial como Filter e Stabbing Westward, e uma grande assertividade de bandas de metal alternativo começava a utilizar apelos industriais de produção em suas músicas. Até Axl Rose preferiu trocar sua banda por um estúdio graças à influência do NIN.
O Nine Inch Nails finalmente retornou em 1999 com um cd duplo chamado "The Fragile". Este foi um imenso sucesso e apareceu em número um na lista da Billboard, com imensas vendas na primeira semana de lançamento, mesmo decaindo semanas depois, talvez porque o clima musical mudou radicalmente nos últimos quatro anos.
Trent Reznor começou um tratamento de desintoxicação antes da gravação do The Fragile, mas se afundou nas drogas mais tarde, durante a turnê. Um remix do álbum, chamado Things Falling Apart, seguiu um ano depois, assim como a turnê mundial extensa, e um DVD dessa turnê, chamado And All That Could Have Been, foi lançado então no começo de 2002.
A formação mudou novamente em 2004 e agora a banda conta com Aaron North, ex-integrante do THE ICARUS LINE na guitarra, Alessandro Cortini nos teclados, Jeordie White (Twiggy Ramirez, ex integrante da banda de Marilyn Manson) no baixo e Jerome Dillon na bateria, além do mentor e líder Trent Reznor, obviamente. Um novo álbum, "With Teeth", trazendo doze faixas, foi lançado em maio de 2005. O baterista Dave Grohl (FOO FIGHTERS, NIRVANA) fez uma participação especial no disco. Trent mais uma vez mostrou seu brilhantismo e o disco foi um sucesso de crítica e de vendas. Mais tarde, Jerome Dillon foi substituído na bateria por Alex Carpetis, que ficou pouco tempo na banda.
Essa formação veio ao Brasil pela primeira vez em 15 anos para fazer dois shows (um no Rio e um em São Paulo) no festival Claro que é Rock, em novembro de 2005. Apesar de terem sido dois shows curtos por serem em festivais, foram shows muito elogiados pelos fãs e pela crítica. Em seguida Alex Carpetis foi substituído pelo baterista Josh Freese , que já trabalhou com várias bandas.
Em fevereiro de 2007, foi lançado um DVD chamado "Beside You in Time", referente á turnê do álbum With Teeth e em abril deste mesmo ano o NIN lançou mais um cd, intitulado "Year Zero". Segundo o próprio Reznor, trata-se de um trabalho altamente conceitual e mais politizado. O YZ teve uma divulgação um tanto quanto "diferente": foi lançada uma campanha viral pela internet para a divulgação desse trabalho, deixando os fãs empolvorosos.
